USN Gunner Smock

USN Gunner Smock

In the 1940s, the world was caught in a whirlwind of upheaval.
The United States Navy fought brutal battles across both the Pacific and Atlantic, with countless vessels cutting through fire and steel.

The USN Gunner Smock was created for those who stood at the very front lines of these battles.

Gunners were constantly exposed to sparks, shell casings, and soot with every shot fired—always one step away from danger.

To protect their uniforms and skin, they needed a tough outer shell that could withstand flames, dirt, and harsh conditions.

The Gunner Smock also played a crucial role in rescuing shipmates from the sea and in cleaning or decontaminating damaged vessels.

Fuel spray, cleaning agents, chemical hazards, sea mist, and strong winds—life on deck constantly punished clothing.
This environment demanded stain resistance, flame resistance, and water repellency.

For gunners moving tirelessly during combat, the pullover design, oversized hood, reinforced stitching, and heavy fabric were all essential.

Every detail existed to protect lives—this “beauty born of necessity” is the true appeal of the Gunner Smock.

Though born from the cruelty of war, its refined functionality remains relevant in modern fashion.

Minimal yet powerful lines, purpose-driven design, and materials that age beautifully.

These are why, after more than 70 years, it continues to inspire brands and hold high value in the vintage market—it is true functional beauty.

We aim to revive this garment’s story as a piece for someone living today.

We reinterpret the functional beauty forged at sea in the 1940s for the modern lifestyle.

This reinterpretation project of the Gunner Smock is currently underway for the 2026 Fall/Winter collection.
